Counting U.S. Secondary and Postsecondary Credentials

This report from Credential Engine provides a preliminary confirmed count of U.S. credentials available in 2018. Credential Engine is a  non-profit whose mission is to create credential transparency, reveal the credential marketplace, increase credential literacy, and empower everyone to make more informed decisions about credentials and their value. To estimate the number of credentials in the US, Credential Engine, in partnership with the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness and the George Washington University Institute of Public Policy, reviewed over 100 websites that aggregate credential-granting programs and determined the extent to which these aggregators offer a comprehensive list of credentials. The report found that at least 334,114 credentials exist in the US, including  high school diplomas, postsecondary degrees and certificates, apprenticeships, certifications, occupational licenses, online alternative degree programs, bootcamps and badges.
