Gold Standard: The Swiss Vocational Education and Training System

The Swiss "dual" vocational education and training system is recognized around the world as a model for integrating workplace and academic training. The upper secondary system serves 70 percent of young Swiss people and enjoys strong support from employers across the country. This report from the Center on International Education Benchmarking (CIEB) of the U.S.-based National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) is one of several case studies that examines international approaches to vocational education and training. This report examines the vocational education system in Switzerland, describing the hands-on learning opportunities students experience through apprenticeships, the role that employers play in developing and advising program development, and the role of local and state policymakers in administering high-quality vocational education.
