Building Blocks: Laying the Groundwork for Guided Pathways Reform in Ohio

As the guided pathways model — a framework that provides guidance and supports to prepare postsecondary learners for future career success — becomes an increasingly widespread practice in community colleges, the Community College Research Center has conducted a series of analyses to examine how such programs are being implemented. This case study examines the implementation of guided pathways in Ohio community colleges to identify innovations and share lessons learned with other states and institutions beginning the process of developing and implementing guided pathways. The analysis examines four elements of implementation:

  • mapping pathways to student end goals,
  • helping students choose and enter a program pathway,
  • keeping students on path, and
  • ensuring that students are learning.

The authors conclude by offering recommendations for other community colleges implementing guided pathways.
