College advising is critical to ensuring learner success and putting students on a path to achieve their career goals. This report from the Center for Community College Student Engagement examines how college advising’s structure, content and intensity help shape the student experience through the human interactions of advising. The report includes student data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), entering student data from the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE), and faculty data from Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE) to map the benefits and challenges of college advising, as well as the impact of college advising’s structure, content and intensity on learners. According to the report, 73 percent of students report that they discussed their career interested with a college advisor. The report further examines an advising model for student athletes and concludes with effective college advising examples from North Carolina, Pennsylvania, California, Tennessee, and Washington.
