The State of Employer Engagement in CTE

From its earliest roots, employer engagement has been a part of CTE's legacy. Yet little is known about what is really happening consistently and systematically across the country, and what state leaders can do to accelerate effective engagement.  

Over the summer, NASDCTEc conducted a survey of the State CTE Directors to better understand how and in what ways employers are engaging in CTE today. This webinar unpacked the survey's results and illustrated the employer engagement landscape with a particular focus on the ways in which states are and can foster and sustain meaningful employer engagement to strengthen their CTE system for all students.

Badging 101: The What, The Why & The How

Sometimes called “the next disrupter” in education, open badges offer an innovative platform for recognizing and displaying a students’ competency demonstrated either inside or outside the traditional classroom. Yet questions remain about how badges work at the institution and state level, how they can be folded into existing education systems, and what it takes to ensure their quality, reliability and validity. The Common Career Technical Core, Programs of Study & Industry-Based Standards

In 2012, NASDCTEc released the Common Career Technical Core, a set of standards developed by states, that lay out what a student should know and be able to do upon completion of a program of study. Since the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) were released, a common question asked is how do the CCTC relate to industry-based standards? This webinar features NASDCTEc's report, The Common Career Technical Core, Programs of Study & Industry-Based Standards, which analyzed a range of industry-based standards to help clarify how they might fit into a program of study undergirded by the CCTC, the methodology used, and its implications for the field.

Legislative Update: Summer Edition
June 5, 2014

As the school year wound down for summer vacation NASDCTEc's Government Relations Associate, Steve Voytek delivered a legislative update on federal activity related to Career Technical Education (CTE) and an outlook on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 funding landscape on June 5 from 3-4 p.m. ET.

Since late last year, Congress has taken steps tward reauthorizing several pieces of legislation that impact CTE including the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act and the Workforce Investmen Act. In addition to updates on these key pieces of legislation, the Obama Administration and the U.S. Departmen of Education have undertaken a number of CTE-related initiatives this year in an effort to boost its support for CTE.

Making Career Readiness Count

NASDCTEc, in partnership with Achieve, hosted a webinar to provide guidance to states interested in building more indicators of career preparation into accountability and public reporting systems, as NASDCTEc and Achieve simultaneously released a new joint publication on the topic.

On this webinar, we shared how states are currently approaching this challenge and what state policy leaders need to consider as they look to reform their own reporting and accountability systems to ensure that the “career” in college- and career-ready accountability and public reporting is a powerful lever to focus priorities, drive progress, and ultimately see more students and their communities succeed. We were joined by leaders from Missouri and Virginia to disuss their accountability and reporting systems.

Supporting 21st Century Educators: How States Are Promoting Career and Technical Educator Effectiveness

Teacher effectiveness is a critical issue on the minds of educators, administrators and state leaders across the country. With many early reform efforts focusing solely on how to improve and measure the effectiveness of educators in the core academic areas, now many are turning their attention to those “untested subjects,” including Career Technical Education (CTE).

To dig into this issue and highlight some early lessons learned from states, the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc), the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders, the Central Comprehensive Center, the Mid-Atlantic Comprehensive Center, and the South Central Comprehensive Center co-hosted a webinar on Supporting 21st Century Educators: How States Are Promoting Career and Technical Educator Effectiveness.
