Senator Patty Murray Receives Congressional Star of Education Award

May 24, 2016 – Washington, D.C. – Today, Advance CTE was proud to honor Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) with its Congressional Star of Education Award for her leadership and dedication to Career Technical Education (CTE) and efforts to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for the future.

Senator Murray has long championed CTE throughout her tenure in the Senate, working to make sure that all Americans have access to successful career pathways from preschool to their careers. She has worked tirelessly to include CTE priorities in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and most recently, the Every Student Succeeds Act. In addition to these efforts, she has elevated CTE as a legislative priority in a number of leadership roles, including Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, the Veteran’s Affairs Committee, and the Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety in addition to her current role as a Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

“We are so fortunate to have Senator Murray as a true advocate for Career Technical Education (CTE) for her state, and our country,” said Kimberly Green, Advance CTE Executive Director. “As a former educator, Senator Murray keenly understands the incredible opportunity CTE provides learners of all ages to gain access to skills and the middle class. We are thankful for her continued leadership and unwavering support of CTE.”

“I am so honored to receive the Star of Education award. I want to thank everyone at Advance CTE for this recognition,” said Senator Murray in a prepared video message. “It is more important than ever that all students have access to quality CTE programs. These programs give them the educational, professional and technical skills they need to meet the demands of the 21st century economy.”

Senator Murray shared a video message with Advance CTE Spring Meeting attendees, where she was honored today.
