STEM Plus Families: Increasing Students’ Access to Opportunities in STEM by Effectively Engaging Families

Families can play a critical role in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning, but many of them have not been equipped to support their children along a STEM career pathway. To combat this challenge, the National PTA Association published this white paper, which draws on findings from a national scan of the family engagement landscape, to provide recommendations for engaging families around STEM learning.

Recommendations from the report include:

  • Demystify STEM for families;
  • Develop a compendium of proven family engagement methods; and
  • Mobilize the community to achieve transformation.

The paper concludes that, even though the gap in the STEM pipeline is not a new problem, intentionally engaging families is a new and promising solution.
