Career Readiness and CTE in a Post-NCLB World

This policy brief from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) takes an introductory look at Career Technical Education (CTE) policy, highlighting opportunities in federal laws such as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, and providing examples of successful CTE programs in Kentucky, Tennessee and California. ESSA affords states the opportunity to integrate CTE into K-12 education programs by linking academic standards with state postsecondary institutions; leveraging funds to integrate academic, CTE and work-based learning opportunities; using Title II funds to support professional development strategies that link CTE and academic instruction; and using CTE to reach traditionally underserved student populations. This brief is a helpful overview for state policymakers looking to support state CTE programs through opportunities such as ESSA.
